Acne can affect anyone
Question: What do Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Garner, Moon Unit Zappa, Kate Winslet, and Mike Wallace have in common?
Answer: Painful memories about acne:
“I had just started ninth grade when I got my acne. And I had braces. I wouldn’t look people in the eye. It was not a good time for me – it just killed my self-esteem. I thought when I didn’t look at someone, they couldn’t see my face.” Kendall Jenner
“I’ve had more acne as an adult than I had as a teenager. After weaning babies, my skin’s gone totally bonkers….so damaged.” Jennifer Garner
“I spent most of my life locked in my bedroom, miserable about my raging acne.” Moon Unit Zappa
“I had a terrible bout of acne after I turned 30.” Kate Winslet
“I used to have acne when I was a kid growing up. You can imagine how serious that was in making you feel bad. And I had skinny bow legs. I mean, as a kid growing up, I was an insecure fella.” Mike Wallace
Famous people are not the only ones who suffer from acne. It’s a scourge. At any given moment, 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from it. Adults, teens, and even babies can be plagued with it.
Causes of acne
Acne appears when a skin pore clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells rise to surface of the pore, and the body sheds them. When the body starts to make lots of sebum, oil that keeps the skin from drying out, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. Instead of rising to the surface, the cells become trapped inside the pore.
Sometimes bacteria that live on our skin, p. acnes, also get inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore, the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying. With bacteria inside, the pore becomes inflamed. If the inflammation goes deep into the skin, an acne cyst or nodule appears.
Don’t wait to get treatment
It’s important to treat acne and not just let it “run its course.” Without treatment, self-esteem suffers and there is the potential for scarring. There are so many great treatments available that you don’t have to live with acne.
